PRESS RELEASE: Solar Communications has appointed John Whitty as CEO to accelerate the next phase of growth and development for the company. Formerly managing director of GCI, one of the UK’s largest independent service providers, Whitty brings over 30 years’ experience in the telecommunications and managed services sector to Solar.
Whitty led GCI during its significant transformation from a traditional telecommunications provider to become one of the leading providers of cloud, hosted voice and connectivity managed services. In his role as CEO at Solar Communications, Whitty is charged with replicating this success by driving operational effectiveness and developing the company’s market proposition.
Whitty’s focus will be on evolving the company’s portfolio to create a breadth and depth of technical expertise that clearly positions Solar Communications as a provider of converged business communication and IT solutions for the SME and corporate market place. Retaining Solar’s commitment to service excellence will be integral to Whitty’s approach, ensuring the company continues to provide value at every stage of the customer engagement process.
John Whitty comments: “The Solar board has provided a very clear mandate of obtaining growth and service excellence. Given its significant, existing client base and its proven dedication to exceptional service, Solar now has an excellent opportunity to become the service provider of choice for all client communications and ICT requirements.”
Mark Colquhoun, founder and majority shareholder of Solar Communications, will be a director on the board, where his focus will be on the strategic growth of Solar through acquisitions, sourcing new business opportunities and major partnerships. He comments: “John has a proven ability to drive transformational growth, with the kind of operational leadership experience that we need to realise Solar’s ambitious plans. I am very excited to have John at the helm of the business.”
Ben Marnham, chairman of Solar Communications, adds: “John has an exceptional track record and I am delighted to be welcoming him to the Solar team. His experience of growing businesses through both organic and inorganic means, combined with his technical heritage, further strengthens our ability to execute on our strategic plan of building an exceptional managed services provider.”
John Whitty began his career as an engineer in the British Army and has held various senior technical posts since then, including that of chief technical officer at Pipex during an extremely acquisitive and organic growth period prior to its disposal to Talk Talk and private equity acquirers. John has an MSc in Data Communications.
